The Coleman Brothers & LSB

Dr. Craig Coleman is the band's mandolin virtuoso. He's also a pretty good tenor and lead singer. One can hear the clear Monroesque influences on his mandolin work, and Oh....Those brother harmonies.

The sounds of acapella hymns and old-time country music were the first influences on Craig, and he gives credit for his desire to learn to play an instrument to his Uncle Bobby who would always “break out the guitar” at family gatherings and entertain the family with songs by Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, and others.

After deciding that he would like to learn to play the guitar, Craig asked his mother and grandmother to buy a record of old country music so that he could try and match the sounds in order to learn the guitar. Upon their return, Craig found they had purchased “Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys: 16 All-time Greatest Hits.” This record was the Craig’s first exposure to Bluegrass music, and he soon fell in love with the high, lonesome sound and the sounds of the mandolin. He soon immersed himself in an attempt to match the notes coming from the records and to imitate the hard-driving, bluesy mandolin of Bill Monroe.

Although heavily influenced by Monroe, Craig has taken the Monroe-style mandolin playing and added his own feelings and emotions to it. He has created a simple, yet complex, style that will leave you begging for more. Give him a listen. I think you're going to like what you hear.
